Man gets tinnitus relief with hearing aids.

Tinnitus has been present for a long time. But it may be the first time you have had to deal with it. Normally, though not always, tinnitus reveals itself as a ceaseless ringing or buzzing in the ears. The sound can be, at times, really loud. However tinnitus manifests for you, this point is most likely true: if tinnitus is bothering you, you may be searching for some new ways to deal with your symptoms.

The good news is that new therapies and treatment options are being developed that aren’t cures for tinnitus but can help you deal with it. Your tongue is even involved in some of those treatments.

Most Recent Approaches to Tinnitus

Possibly the newest tinnitus treatment that we’ve seen does indeed offer quite a bit of promise, even if it seems a little odd at first. Both the ear and the tongue are stimulated with this device designed at the Trinity School of Medicine in Dublin. Bi-modal neurostimulation is the technical term for this method.

The results were rather striking with this device based on the first tests. 12 weeks was about how long most people were treated. Within those 12 months, those same people noted a dramatic decrease in tinnitus symptoms. But until the testing phase is finished it won’t be extensively available.

How Can I Get Relief From my Tinnitus Now?

Unfortunately, it will probably be quite a while before novel treatments like this are widely accessible. So how can you control your tinnitus now?

There are, luckily, some tinnitus management technology that has recently come onto the market. And one of the best new methods of managing tinnitus is something you’ve probably already heard of: your hearing aid.

Here’s the way it works:

Your hearing aid can give you something else to listen to. When you start to lose your hearing, the sounds of the outside world get quieter and that can make the internal sounds of tinnitus become louder. A hearing aid can raise the volume on the rest of the audio spectrum. By raising the volume of outside sounds, your tinnitus sounds will often vanish into the background.

Your hearing aid can mask the noise. If your hearing loss is relatively minor, then a masking device may be the best way to address your symptoms. A hearing aid has a comparable appearance to a masking device. And some hearing aids can be augmented with masking technology. Your tinnitus symptoms can be obscured by sounds emitted by this type of technology. At times this will be a tone, in other cases, it might be some white noise. Whatever is going to best hide the ringing in your ears.

This is, naturally, only the beginning. We can show you devices that work best for tinnitus. Contact us.
